Beyond the League: Members Making a Difference in Their Communities and Across the State
Norma Staaf is the sole League member in Idaho County, the state's largest county where she and her husband live in the forested hills As an individual, not as a representative of the League, Norma took the lead in raising funds to place "Everyone is Welcome Here" billboards in her corner of Idaho. Here's Norma's story:
“I was inspired to do the billboards when I bought one of the Wassmuth Center's "Everyone is Welcome Here" yard signs this summer. I thought it would look great and reach more people at a larger scale if we put that message on billboards. I mentioned the idea to a few friends and realized it would be easy to raise money. I called the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights in Boise to request use of their graphic and a partnership was born. They provided their name/logo and image and we raised money locally by talking to a few more friends. The advent of electronic billboards that show multiple images makes it much quicker and easier to get billboard space compared to the traditional printed vinyl billboards. Both the Grangeville and Lewiston billboards are owned by our great, independent, locally owned newspapers, not national billboard companies. We are supporting journalism, our neighbors and inclusion! “
The Idaho League is proud to include people like Norma in its membership. If you know of a League member who, as an individual, is improving the lives of others in their communities or across the state, please send their name and a brief description of their efforts to lwvid1944@gmail.com.

On Saturday, August 23, 2025, the North-Central Idaho Democratic Coalition* sponsored a “Forum with Our Members of Congress”. The event was designed to provide an opportunity for Senators Crapo and Risch, along with Congressman Fulcher, to hear from, and respond to, concerns of their constituents in the area in an environment with well-defined rules for civility and respect for all points of view.
The forum, held in the Williams Conference Center at Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston, was planned and conducted in accordance with guidelines from Braver Angels, a non-partisan volunteer organization that embraces respect, honesty, and responsible citizenship. They encourage this by teaching respectful communication skills through free workshops, one of which was conducted in the morning before the Forum. The driving force that fuels their mission is “Bringing Americans together to bridge the partisan divide and strengthen our democratic republic.”
Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, the three representatives declined to appear. Nor did they send any prepared statements to be read to the attendees. The organizers had anticipated this and had said that the event would take place regardless, that it would be videotaped, and the video would be sent to the representatives.
